Outdoor Entertaining Areas in Macarthur
What an Outdoor Entertaining Area Includes
An outdoor entertaining area can be as simple as a covered patio or as detailed as a full outdoor kitchen with built-in seating, lighting, and heating. We design the space around how your family actually uses the backyard.
Roofed and covered areas. Most outdoor entertaining spaces start with overhead protection. A pitched roof patio or insulated cover gives shade in summer, shelter from rain, and a definition that turns the backyard into a usable room. Our Werombi patio cover project shows how a modern timber and steel structure can transform a large backyard into an all-weather space.
Decks and flooring. A timber or composite deck creates the foundation for outdoor furniture, dining settings, and barbecue areas. Decks raise the entertaining surface and create a clean transition from indoor flooring. For projects on more even ground, we also work with paved or tiled surfaces.
Outdoor kitchens and barbecue setups. Built-in barbecues, bench tops, sinks, and storage cabinets bring the cooking space outside. This means the cook is not stuck in the kitchen while everyone else is enjoying the deck. Outdoor kitchens can be as compact as a single barbecue with a stone benchtop, or a full setup with a grill, side burners, fridge, and prep area.
Lighting, fans, and heating. A well-designed alfresco area is usable year-round. Recessed LED downlights, ceiling fans, and outdoor heating extend the space from summer evenings into cooler months. We coordinate with electricians during the build so the wiring is hidden and the finish is clean.
Privacy screens and built-in seating. Vertical timber screens, slat panels, and built-in bench seating add privacy from neighbours and create a more intimate feeling. These features also help on smaller estate blocks in Gregory Hills, Oran Park, and Spring Farm where neighbouring homes sit close to the property line.
Materials That Suit the Australian Climate
Material choice matters for outdoor builds. UV exposure, temperature swings, and storm activity all take a toll on poorly specified materials.
Timber
Hardwoods like Merbau, Spotted Gum, and Blackbutt are durable, attractive, and age well. They handle weather exposure when properly sealed and maintained.
Steel
Powder-coated steel framing pairs well with timber for modern designs. Steel is strong, fire resistant, and lets us span larger areas without bulky posts.
Composite decking
Engineered boards resist fading, warping, and termite damage. Composite is a good choice for families who want low maintenance over decades of use.
Roofing
Insulated panel roofs reduce heat transfer in summer and noise in the rain. Polycarbonate panels can be used to bring filtered light into shaded areas. Each material has trade-offs that we walk through during design.
How We Design Your Alfresco Space
The design starts with your block, your home, and how your family lives. We visit the property, talk through how you use the backyard now and how you want to use it, and look at orientation, sun exposure, prevailing wind, and how the space will connect to the existing house.
A good alfresco design reads as a continuation of the home, not a bolt-on. We look at rooflines, materials, and floor levels so the new space integrates with the existing structure. If your home opens directly onto the backyard from a kitchen or living area, we plan the alfresco to flow from those rooms with minimal threshold changes.
We also consider drainage and ventilation. Macarthur summers are hot and dry, but storms can be heavy when they arrive. The build needs to manage runoff and keep the space dry. Cross ventilation through ceiling fans and open sides keeps the area comfortable without trapping heat.
For larger projects, we combine custom decks, pergola construction, and outdoor kitchens into a single coordinated build. This is more efficient than running separate trades and produces a more cohesive end result.
Approvals and Compliance
Most outdoor entertaining structures require council approval. Pergolas, patios, and decks above certain heights and sizes need either a Complying Development Certificate or a Development Application. Outdoor kitchens with permanent gas, water, or electrical connections also have compliance requirements.
We assess approval requirements during the site visit and handle all paperwork, lodgement, and certifier coordination. You do not have to deal with council directly. We also manage compliance with the National Construction Code, Australian Standards for decking and roofing, and electrical certifications for any wiring work.
Our Process
Every outdoor entertaining project follows the same structured approach.
1. Site visit and design brief. We meet you on site, walk the backyard, and understand how you want to use the finished space.
2. Concept design and quote. We prepare a concept layout with materials, finishes, and a fixed quote with clear allowances.
3. Approvals and drafting. We finalise drawings and lodge the required approvals. You do not need to chase council.
4. Build. Our team coordinates trades, manages site access, and keeps you informed throughout the build.
5. Handover. We complete final inspections and walk you through the finished space.
This service sits within our broader outdoor living work. The Elderslie outdoor living project shows what a full transformation looks like when decking, pergola, and entertaining elements come together. You can see it in our Elderslie outdoor living project.
